One thing I’ve always completed, multiple times, is school. I graduated from college in May of 2020 (hi, pandemic), and have so many thoughts on my time there and what I think I did right vs what I did wrong. As a first-generation college graduate, I want to give advice to those who are in the same position, so that you can have a clear idea of what to expect.

I’ll dive into my four years of attending as a commuter student, talk about my major, my experience, my outlook (because that matters), and more. Head to the office; there’s lots to discuss.

Sacheu DoubleDown Lip Definer

I love an innovative makeup product. So much is all the same these days that it’s nice to see brands really try to create something that is truly unique. It’s not unexpected from Sacheu. I believe they’re the brand that really made lip stains popular, with their original Peel Off Lip Liner STAY-N. Since then, they’ve experimented a lot in the world of long-lasting makeup, so it’s interesting to see them broaden into the multi-use product category. This is a 2-in-1 lip product that lines and fills in with one swipe. The liner side is a satin finish, while the balm side hydrates with skincare ingredients like Avocado Oil and Vitamin E. I recently picked this up in the shade “Glossed Over,” which is a true cool mauve. I was surprised by how easy it was to apply and how good it looked with little effort. I see myself using this all the time, and I need to pick up more shades asap. I’m eyeing “Coffee Break” (a warm brown) and “Keep it Pink” (rose pink) next.

Rhode Summer Drop

Is this controversial? Maybe. But I’m always going to be honest, so I will say that I’m disappointed I still haven’t received a shipping notification for my order placed on launch day. HOWEVER, with that being said, I’ve been a Rhode fan from the start, and this drop won’t change that. From someone who has bought on launch day from almost every single drop they’ve ever had, I can say I’ve never seen the brand get so much attention as it did for this. I can understand that even Rhode itself would be blindsided, and I’m sure they’re doing everything in their power to fulfill orders as quickly as possible. I’m adding this into my favorites because I know I’m going to love everything. My sister was lucky enough to receive her order already, so I’ve had a chance to swatch everything already, and it’s as perfect as I imagined it would be. I’ve never been disappointed by a Rhode product, and it’s because I resonate with the style and look that they are selling. Rhode embodies the clean, minimal style so perfectly.

Salomon XT-6 Sneakers

I put these on my June Wishlist, and shortly after, my current workout shoes decided to break down on me. The wire in the heel started sticking out, and it was getting so painful to walk in them, so I took it as my sign that these were meant to be mine. This Vanilla Ice/Almond Milk is my dream colorway. Neutral, but with the pop of color in the middle to give them a very cool twist. They’re also really comfy, and I love that they don’t have laces. I’m definitely going to be getting these in brown come the fall.

Bi-weekly Manicures

Took a tiny nail break the past few months, but we are so back. Last time it was the mermaid pearl nails; this week I’m stepping out of my comfort zone with a pastel peachy pink that makes me look like I spent the last two weeks in the Turks & Caicos. Already planning my 4th of July nails and stealing my own inspiration from here.

Saltair Serum Infused Nourishing Body Wash

Recently finished my beloved Fenty Body Wash, and reluctantly decided to switch it up (for you guys, obviously), and test a new one. I’ve tried a few things from Saltair before but never their body wash, so I was very intrigued to see if I liked it as much as I do the rest of their line. I only got it two days ago, but I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s serum-infused, so it’s very hydrating and has a nice lather to it. I got the Coral Coast scent, and it smells a lot like Ouai’s St. Barts line to me (which I loveee).

Saltair makes a lot of really great products, and they’re pretty affordable for the luxury aesthetic they embody. Also, right now, their entire brand is buy one, get one half-off, so it’s a great time to try.

My night routine is entirely non-negotiable. Even on the nights when I’m exhausted, busy, or just lacking motivation, I still show up for it. I’ve simply learned the hard way that skipping it means a miserable tomorrow. Want to know what helps me wake up hydrated, glowy, and happy? Here’s how I end every night—

A night shower/washing my hair every day

Night showers win over morning showers every time. I love to do both on any days where time permits, but if I’m choosing one, it’s the one that takes off all of the day’s germs before getting into my nice, clean bed. Plus, it’s super relaxing to shower before bed. Part of my nightly shower is washing my hair. Yes, I was my hair every single day. I don’t feel clean unless I do, and I couldn’t imagine submerging myself in the shower without getting my hair wet. I feel like I’d just be cold? I actually have noticed my hair grows quicker and looks better when I wash it every day, and I don’t mind doing it, so it’s a must every night for me.

Skincare routine

My skincare routine is the most consistent thing in my life. I could get home super late or be half-asleep, and I will still be doing my skincare routine immediately after my shower. I enjoy my routine and find it really relaxing, so I don’t ever see it as a chore. While I believe skin is mostly genetic, I owe the remaining credit to being so consistent with my routine.

The Routine: I wash my face in the shower with my Rhode Pineapple Cleanser, then once I get out, it’s the Rhode Glazing Mist, Rhode Glazing Milk, Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum, YTTP Superfood Skin Drip, Rhode Barrier Restore Cream, the Biossance Eye Serum, and lastly, the Rhode Peptide Lip Mask. There was a short period of time when I tried mixing it up, but I quickly realized it wasn’t for me, and back to my staples I went.

Drinking tons of water

All I drink is water (not a fan of the taste of anything else), but I make sure to drink even more water at night. I feel like it sets up my skin to be extra hydrated and fresh in the morning, and it stops me from snacking late at night. I feel a difference in the way my body feels in the morning when I drink more water at night vs when I don’t.

Ten-minute clean-up

Before I shower, I always do a quick room cleanup. Even if it’s just ten minutes to pick up whatever I didn’t have a chance to put away during the day. I love coming back to a perfectly clean room after my shower, and I wake up in such a better mood when I’m waking up in a clean space rather than a disorganized one.

A sweet treat & something to watch

I’m doubling down here because they’re a package deal. I have an insane sweet tooth. A small percentage of my overall happiness comes from indulging in something sweet every day. Some days I try to be healthy about it; some days I don’t. Either way, I need something every night before bed. I’m aging myself so badly here (I’m 27), but there’s nothing more relaxing than being freshly showered, skincare done, with a full water bottle, a sweet treat, and a TV show to end your night. I prefer a show or a movie over scrolling on my phone, so I always have something to watch.

Coastal Pullovers

Something to throw on after a long day at the beach. When the sun starts to set, and the breeze becomes a bit sharper. These Shop Fancy pullovers are a dream. Chic sportswear that looks like it came straight from the 90s. I’m in awe.

I’ve been really into finding matching sets that don’t perfectly match. Something with contrast that still looks elevated, but relaxed. As a WFH girl and just an overall girl who loves to be comfy, I love finding loungewear sets that I can wear even when it’s hot out.

Coach Chelsea 30 in Maple

I’ve had dreams about this bag. It’s the shade of brown I love most. It’s so 90s chic (noticing a theme here?) and a constant thought in my mind. I’m holding off for now, but I don’t know how much longer I can wait to give this permanent residence in my wardrobe. The slouch, the leather—and it’s the perfect size for summer. I love bags of all sizes, but as an over-packer, I realistically need a bag at minimum this size.

Salomon Sneakers

I’ve been eyeing Salomon’s for a bit, mostly for their stunning colorways. This summer is all about moving my body and staying active, so why not treat myself to a new pair of shoes? For the motivation, right? I love the color on the tongue of the first pair, the neutral pattern of the third, and, of course, I want a brown pair as well. Which would you choose?

Summer Keepsakes

Two staple accessories that I’ve been eyeing since the start of spring. I’m normally not a hat girl (although I wish I was), but I actually think this raffia bucket hat looks really flattering. Pair that thought with a Madewell store credit, and the checkout process almost happens itself.

On the other hand, I’m also in love with these oval earrings from Anthropologie and am distraught to see that they’re on back order until the end of July. I’m sure I can find similar ones, but this style/shape is officially on my radar.

Skirts of Every Kind

Is a dress easy to throw on in the summer? I’d argue a skirt is just as much.

I’m on the lookout for easy-to-style skirts that are comfortable but cute, that I can wear all summer long. Linen ones from Abercrombie, Sporty ones from x, Satin lace ones for outdoor dinners—I want them all.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Full Coverage Concealer

A beauty product that I come back to time and time again. Very lightweight, yet opaque enough to cover and correct. Perfect for the summertime and has a great shade range for those with true neutral undertones. If you gravitate towards natural looks, but struggle with under-eye darkness, this is a great common-ground concealer. I use the shade 360N.

35mm Film Camera

I love my film camera. I have yet to develop anything, but the experience of capturing on it has been so…whimsical? It feels different from any other camera I have (and I have quite a few), and I’ve been collecting finished rolls, anxiously waiting to have enough ready to go and develop. A beach-bag essential all summer long.

Rhode Lip Products

Rhode’s always had a permanent reservation here, but lately, the lip products have taken their place right at the top drawer of my vanity again. I forgot how much I love the new and improved formula, and how lovely each shade is. My favorites at the moment are PB&J, Salty Tan, and Toast.

Ordinary Lash Curl Finisher

The perfect at-home lash lift for summer. If mascara feels too heavy in the heat, this is a great alternative. A clear mascara that holds your lashes up. No worries about smudging or flaking, just beautiful, weightless lashes all day long.

Rivals Season Two

I watched season one when it first came out in 2024 and quickly fell in love with it. I’m so ecstatic that it came back, but I have yet to find anyone who’s watched, so I’m still crossing my fingers for a third season. This show has a little bit of everything. Taking place in the 1980s English countryside, this is a classic rich people’s drama, following powerful people fighting over a regional television franchise while also going through their personal life problems. I could not recommend this more. It’s on Hulu, whenever you’re ready to watch.

I think I got my first digital camera when I was maybe ten or eleven years old. I don’t remember using it much, just receiving it, and feeling like it would be something I’d really enjoy using. I was always the kid who had to bring a disposable on class field trips, forced my siblings to recreate music videos or dramatic movie scenes, and, when Instagram was created, you better believe I was obnoxiously posting every little thing, multiple times a day (can we bring that back, please?).

Fast forward to almost three years ago, my sister had just given birth to her first baby, and I got the urge to start capturing memories again. We are the adults now, and I want my nephews and my future kids to be able to look back on not just special days like birthdays or Christmas, but everyday moments. Summers at the beach, the first warm day of spring at the park, the ice cream truck, and the way my nephew says “ice cream truck”. These factors, and the one where my sister told me how much she paid for her newborn's photo shoot, made me impulsively spend way too much money on a camera in June of 2023.

My nephew became my little model, taking (my version of) professional photos for every little milestone of his. I’ve watched hours of videos on my specific camera and photography in general, and while I still have so much to learn, I’m really proud of how much I’ve improved since the start.

Sometimes I think about what it would look like to pursue photography a bit more seriously. There are SO many paths you can go down, and what excites me the most is the idea of doing retail/brand photography. I’ve done a bit for my job, and I thoroughly enjoy each experience. I also just started a business that will really allow me to start gaining experience, which is exciting.

I’ve tried numerous kinda of hobbies over the past few years, and the two that have really stuck have been writing and photography. I think that’s how you know you’re meant to do something—when it's natural and easy to do.

Also, you can be good at almost anything– because practice makes perfect.

Hailey is always the inspo. I’ve always loved her effortless, off-duty, minimal style. An oversized long-sleeve and flip-flops? Obviously, it’s the move. Remember to always incorporate your own flair. Personally, I’d opt for square to sandals because I love the look, and round sunglasses because they fit my face better.

No more matching sets

Matching workout sets? It’s too easy! There’s something about looking like you threw on the first thing in reach before heading out the door to run errands that is very chic. I’m talking thrifted oversized shirts, track shorts, and messy-air-dried hair.

Oversized basics made chic

I seriously love an oversized look. Maybe it’s because I WFH, so I’m always seeking comfort, or the fact that I just think it looks really cool and effortless—being able to pull off an oversized piece or outfit is a true talent. Button-ups, tees, light knit sweaters—it’s very quiet, confident street-style.

Dresses are easy, but are skirts easier? Dressed down for the grocery store or dressed up for brunch (or vice versa!), There are endless amounts of ways to style a skirt during spring and summer. Grab a few in neutral colors and different textures (linen, of course!), and you’ll have the most versatile capsule wardrobe.

Shorts that aren’t denim

Again, this is all coming from the mouth of a WFH girlie, but shorts don’t always need to be denim to be cute. Lounge shorts can be styled in a million and one ways, and the types of lounge shorts are becoming endless. I’ve been seeing a lot of lace and ruffles, so I have a feeling we’ll be seeing them a lot this season.

Scarves, boat and totes, headbands, or even a film camera, ’90s accessories are the perfect way of playing up an outfit without making it overly loud (for the minimalists, of course). Recently bought both a mini and medium boat and tote, and they will both for sure be my go-to bags all spring and summer.

When I looked at job descriptions, I noticed a pattern: employers wanted familiarity with certain programs, but the truth was, most entry-level candidates didn’t actually know how to use them yet. Instead of seeing that as a barrier, I saw it as an opportunity. I thought, if these tools are going to be essential anyway, why wait for someone to teach them to me?

That shift in mindset changed everything. It wasn’t about trying to be impressive—it was about not wanting to walk into my future feeling unprepared.

So I started learning.

First things first, I treated my evenings and weekends like creative playgrounds. Canva became a space where I experimented with design, not because anyone asked me to, but because I liked putting together designs that I could imagine creating one day for a brand. I’d look at the hundreds of promotional emails I’d get a week from brands I loved, and I’d try to replicate them. If I didn’t know how to, I’d learn to (thanks, YouTube and TikTok).

Second, I was the biggest fan of “trial and error”. There are so many advantages in being unknown, in having no one care. In 2018, I started a website because I wanted to strengthen my writing skills, learn about SEO, and start utilizing social media from a business standpoint. It was in no way successful—but I was. I learned everything I set out to learn, the best Pinterest practices to drive traffic to your website, connecting MailChimp to WordPress to start a newsletter—the list goes on and on.

And that’s where most of my ambition came from. I’d see things that inspired me. I’ve always had this mindset: “If it can be done, then I can do it.”

The more I learned, the more I realized how accessible skill-building actually is. You don’t need a title to open a program. You don’t need permission to try. So much of early career growth depends not on experience but on initiative—on the willingness to open the door yourself instead of waiting for someone to invite you in. Every time I picked up a new skill, it gave me a quiet confidence that I wasn’t just preparing for a job; I was preparing for myself. That feeling is something every young professional deserves to experience.

When it finally came time to apply for jobs, I expected these skills to be helpful, but I didn’t expect them to become the thing interviewers wanted to talk about. I’d had built a website to show off each skill I had, I wore it as a badge of honor. Interviewers noticed, and they were impressed. It wasn’t that I was the most qualified person in the room—far from it. But I showed ambition. I showed my determination to learn. Initiative is one of the greatest skills you can have.

The skills that make you unique often start as the things you do for fun. Too many people underestimate the value of their interests simply because they don’t come with a certificate or a formal class attached to them. But passion is often the strongest teacher. Curiosity is often the best coach.

Looking back, I think the real reason these hobbies turned into resume highlights is because they came from a place of authenticity. I wasn’t trying to check boxes or impress anyone.
